The ‘Mindfulness Matters’ method
‘Mindfulness Matters’ is an ‘attention training’ using the Eline Snel method. ‘Attention training’ is also known as ‘mindfulness’. During the eight-week to ten-week training, on average one hour per week, children learn to stabilise, focus and shift their attention based on a kind, attentive approach. They become familiar with their inner-world, without having to make any immediate judgements about what they (or others) think, feel or experience. They learn to deal with calm and turmoil when these present themselves. And to acknowledge ‘troublesome thoughts and feelings’ without burying them away, or getting carried away by them, but by simply giving them some kind attention. And above all: they learn to be kind, to themselves and others.
It was a special time, developing all the handbooks in practice. The intensive years began in 2007: discovering with children, on a daily basis, what meditation can mean for them. From toddlers to adolescents. Discovering with the children what kind of language reflects their world. Experiencing the significance of the stories. How and where the lesson material needed to change. How it could be accessible for every child. Whether sick or healthy, facing concentration problems or problem-free, whether unable to sleep or always feeling tip-top, whether showing symptoms of anxiety or depression or living life to the fullest.
How could I make the method suitable for use in schools (primary and secondary)? In healthcare? But also in hospitals, deprived neighbourhoods and in schools with all kinds of nationalities. Both in groups and individually. And, not unimportantly, how could I involve the parents in this important process of inner growth, awareness, regulating emotions and self-compassion? I succeeded.
I developed four handbooks for four age categories, in five different languages (English, French, German, Spanish and Dutch).

During the training you choose one handbook, with one age category to work with. Your handbook of choice is included in the training course. Other handbooks can be purchased at a later date.
